Economic resilience and opportunity assessments
Mapping a bioregion’s energy, material, and financial flows alongside its ecological limits, risks, and opportunities for a regenerative economy.
The BioFi Project works with local governments, impact investors, philanthropists, and Bioregional Financing Facility teams to apply a living systems framework to understand how their bioregion’s economy functions—and where investment can support regeneration and resilience.
Each assessment maps energy, material, and financial flows within the bioregion and across its boundaries, revealing dependencies, resource losses, and opportunities to retain and circulate value locally. It examines these flows alongside ecological carrying capacities and locally relevant planetary boundary indicators to identify pressures on living systems and inform economic planning.
The assessment also maps bioregional risks—including climate hazards, ecosystem degradation, resource scarcity, supply chain vulnerabilities, and financial dependencies—and identifies opportunities to reduce exposure and strengthen resilience. This helps partners understand how risks interact and where coordinated action can address their underlying drivers.
Working with regional partners, we translate the findings into actionable opportunities for circular resource use, import replacement, ecosystem regeneration, and stronger local supply chains. The result is a shared evidence base, clear visual maps, and a prioritized set of regeneration and risk mitigation opportunities to guide policy, project development, and capital allocation. We hope for these reports to be made public and to guide bioregional economic transition strategy planning for a range of stakeholders.
